Designer Spotlight: Kastillo Home and the Couch Collab That Saved Hyams

I felt pretty lucky when I randomly came across Kastillo (pronounced KÄ-STĒ-YŌ).

I’d never heard of them in all my research and then suddenly, there they were. The vibe on their site was so good. Really stylish, really considered, and not “same same”.

I remember thinking: I’ve hit the Hyams Beach jackpot.

Because I was deep in the furniture hunt, trying to find unique pieces and it was going one of two ways:

  • stunning, but so far out of budget it was laughable

  • affordable, but mass-produced and a bit meh

And look, there’s a place for that too. But for Hyams I wanted something beachy and cool, with personality. Furniture that makes the space feel intentional, not like I panic-bought it in a rush.

At a glance

Their vibe: timeless yet playful, sustainable design
Where they’re based: founded in Melbourne, now calling Bali home
How it’s made: handcrafted, built for quality and longevity, with “the beauty of imperfection” and no two pieces the same

Who’s behind Kastillo (and why I trusted them)

Kastillo is the “love child” of Samier Davis and Ainslie Lomas. They founded it in Melbourne, and now call Bali home, leaning into the “slow life” in the way they live and the way they create.

They work directly with artisans across the island, and every piece is meticulously handcrafted with a strong emphasis on quality and longevity. Their words, and it shows.

And I love that they’re open about their values too. They talk about ethical practices, fair trade principles, and partnering with family-run businesses.

Plus, they plant a tree for every piece purchased, and mention partnering with trees4trees.org.

My first buy: the Wave Bed (because, Hyams)

The first thing I bought was the Wave Bed, because… we’re at the beach. A subtle wave moment just works.

I’m always trying to thread a theme through a home in a way that’s not literal. No seashell lamps. No “Life’s a Beach” signs. Just little nods that make the space feel cohesive.

The Wave Bed felt like the perfect way to tie the ocean vibe in, quietly.

Then the couch collab happened (and my ears pricked up instantly)

When Ainslie casually mentioned we could do a furniture collab, my ears pricked up immediately.

Our upstairs living area at Hyams is small and a weird shape, and making it feel comfy yet spacious and luxe was feeling like mission impossible.

Standard couch sizes were either:

  • too big and would swallow the space, or

  • small enough, but looked like the most uncomfortable thing in the world

And with a picky husband, uncomfortable was not going to cut it.

So, we started chatting, I measured everything a million times, and we worked out what we actually needed.

The brief (simple, but non-negotiable)

The brief was:

  • Stylish

  • Unique

  • Super soft and comfy

  • Perfect for a weird, small space

  • Feels luxe, not cramped

  • An arvo couch for reading while the kids are downstairs

It needed to be a vibe. Everything does for me.

Because I don’t want a random pile of items I grabbed on the cheap. I want the house to feel thought out and I want it to deliver an experience.

The process (this is where I knew they got it)

This is the part I loved. Ainslie just got it.

I sent through my references, my ideas, the feeling I wanted, and she came back with solutions. It felt aligned with what they say they’re about: slow-made pieces, crafted with intention, designed for longevity.

And because their pieces are handmade, there’s this “made, not churned out” feeling to the whole process.

The final result: the upstairs finally makes sense

The couch is now the anchor piece that makes the whole upstairs work.

It’s genuinely comfy but still looks elevated. It fits the room properly. It feels like you can actually live in it, but it’s still special.

That’s the sweet spot.

The slippery slope: I didn’t just buy the couch

Once I committed, I committed.

Because I’m obsessed, I also bought:

  • their beds

  • bedside tables

  • even the coffee table for Sirena Del Sol

When you find a brand that nails the balance of style, comfort and personality, it’s hard not to keep going.

Good to know before you order (real life details)

A few things I appreciated that they’re upfront about:

  • Lead times: In-stock items can take up to 10 business days to dispatch from their Melbourne warehouse, then allow another 10 business days for delivery.

  • Pre-orders: shipped directly from their factory in Bali, and can arrive in wooden crates.

  • Natural variation: teak is organic, and because pieces are handmade, slight variations (and even grain cracking) can happen. They frame it as part of the character, not a flaw.

  • Sustainability stuff I weirdly loved: they talk about recycled packaging and literally warn you not to be surprised if your order arrives in a recycled box like a broken-down Mi Goreng box. Iconic.

I’ll link every Kastillo piece I used at Hyams inside Shop the Look, so you can find them without digging through a million posts.
