A Stay Should Be the Plan: My Non-Negotiables
A Stay Should Be the Plan: My Non-Negotiables
I’m going to say something, and I stand by it.
A stay shouldn’t just be where you sleep. A stay should be the plan.
Not in a “we never leave the property” way (although honestly, sometimes yes). More in the sense that the place itself must add something to your life. The space sets the mood. It changes how you feel. It’s the difference between… fine… and I don’t want to go home.
Over the years of building stays, staying in a lot of places, and being very picky (it’s a gift and a curse), I’ve worked out my non negotiables.
These are the things that make a stay worth booking again, recommending to a friend, or giving the Logan Brae tick of approval.
1) The place must have a point of view
If it could be anywhere, it’s not for me.
I want to feel like someone made decisions. Like the space has a personality. It doesn’t have to be loud or wild, but it can’t be bland. I want charm, character, warmth, and intention.
I’m not saying everything needs to be expensive. I’m saying it needs to feel considered.
2) Comfort is not optional
I don’t care how good the styling is if the couch feels like a park bench.
I want the type of comfort where you instantly relax. The bed matters. The pillows matter. The couch matters. The heating and cooling matters.
Because if I’m paying good money, I’m not doing back pain as a bonus feature.
3) Clean. Like actually clean
Not “looks clean in photos”.
Clean corners. Clean bathroom. Clean glass. Clean linen. No weird smells. No crumbs in the toaster. No mystery sticky patch on the remote. You know what I mean.
This is the one area where there is zero room for “close enough”.
4) A bathroom that feels like a treat
I want a bathroom that makes me want to have a shower even if I showered an hour ago.
Great water pressure. Nice towels. Good lighting (no horror overhead spotlight). Somewhere to put my things. Hooks. A mirror you can actually see yourself in.
Bathrooms are where a stay either feels premium, or it doesn’t.
5) The small details that make it feel easy
A stay feels high end when it feels effortless.
A few examples:
You can find the light switches without a treasure map.
There’s a proper coffee setup (not two sad sachets and a teaspoon).
Things work, and nothing’s broken (sounds basic, but it’s shockingly rare).
It’s obvious how everything works without instructions written like a legal document.
Proper cleaning items. And I’m not joking, I once stayed somewhere that had one microfibre cloth that looked about six months old. Come on. It’s so simple.
I don’t want friction. I want flow.
6) Outdoor space that you’ll actually use
If there’s an outdoor area, it should be inviting.
A comfy seat. A view. A firepit. A pool. A bath. A table you actually want to eat at. Some shade. Some privacy.
Even if it’s tiny, it should feel like a little moment.
7) The vibe must match the location
If you’re at the beach, it should feel coastal in a subtle way. If you’re in the mountains, it should feel cosy and grounded. Not theme park themed, just aligned.
The best stays don’t fight their surroundings. They lean in.
8) Hospitality you can feel (without being in your face)
I want to feel looked after, not monitored.
Clear communication. Helpful local tips. A little welcome moment. Thoughtful touches. Fast response if something goes wrong.
And also, boundaries. I don’t want a host who messages me 47 times. I want calm confidence.
9) No “random beige” energy
Ok I’m going to say it gently.
I’m not anti-neutral. I’m anti boring.
If everything is beige and generic and safe, it doesn’t light me up. I want at least one thing with personality. One bold choice. One interesting piece. One little design moment that makes me feel something.
10) The stay must make you feel something
This is the big one.
A stay should make you feel calmer, lighter, more inspired, more rested, more romantic, more present. Whatever it is you came for.
Because if all you needed was a roof and a bed, you could book anywhere.
The Logan Brae tick
This is basically what earns the Logan Brae tick of approval.
Not perfection. Not a million-dollar fit out. Just intention, comfort, quality, and a bit of magic.
Because a stay should be the plan.
