Meet Asia Upward, the woman behind Logan Brae Collection

I’ve always loved the process of taking an idea and turning it into something real. Seeing the potential in a place, imagining what it could become and then working out how to bring it all to life.

My journey started long before boutique accommodation. I spent around 20 years working as a professional photographer, creating imagery for brands. A big part of my work involved building sets and styling shoots around the products I was photographing. Every brief was different, every brand had its own identity, and each set needed to tell a different story.

I was never doing the same thing twice. I’d start with an idea, work out how to bring it to life and build an entire visual world around it, often from scratch. Looking back, I can see how naturally that way of working has carried into everything I do today.

My move into accommodation started on our family’s apple orchard in the Blue Mountains. While pregnant, I decided to transform an old machinery shed into a place for people to stay. What began as one project grew into a successful accommodation business, with multiple stays and features in publications including Vogue Living, Gourmet Traveller and Harpers Bazaar.

Somewhere along the way, I discovered that what I really loved wasn’t simply owning accommodation. It was creating it.

I love finding a property with potential, imagining what it could become, working through the design, choosing the materials, styling every detail and building an entire business around the finished product. From the initial concept and renovation through to photography, marketing, systems and the guest experience, I love bringing all the pieces together.

I’m a bit of a chameleon when it comes to design.

I’ve never really had one particular interior style, and I don’t think I’d want to. My background taught me to approach every project with fresh eyes. Just as every brand shoot needed its own look and feel, every property deserves the same consideration.

A place in the Blue Mountains calls for something different to a beach house on the South Coast. The landscape, the architecture, the light and the history of a building all influence the direction I take. I love exploring different ideas and letting each project develop its own personality, rather than trying to make everything look like the last thing I created.

For me, the styling is about more than choosing beautiful things. It’s about creating a feeling. The kind of place where you walk through the door and immediately feel that someone has thought about everything, even if you can’t quite put your finger on why it works.

But a beautiful space is only part of the story. I love the business side just as much. Building the brand, getting the photography right, understanding the market, creating an experience guests want to come back to and putting the right systems in place to make the whole thing work.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking a property from an idea to a finished, turnkey accommodation business that people want to book. I love the creative decisions, the problem-solving, the details that bring everything together and the challenge of making it commercially successful.

And then, I sell it.

I sold Mt Kanimbla Retreats in 2025, marking the end of another chapter. For me, selling a project isn’t the end of the story. It’s part of the process. I love building something from the ground up, developing it into a successful business and then having the freedom to take everything I’ve learnt into whatever comes next.

My latest chapter is Sirena Del Sol at Hyams Beach on the NSW South Coast. A 1970s beach house, a Mediterranean-inspired vision and a completely different landscape to the Blue Mountains. It’s another opportunity to start with a blank canvas and create somewhere with its own character.

Through Logan Brae Collection, I share the places I create and the thinking behind them. I’m interested in more than pretty interiors. I love the combination of creativity and commercial thinking, and the process of turning a property into something memorable that also works as a business.

Outside of work, I’m a mum, a photographer at heart, an ideas person and someone who loves a new challenge. I’ve learnt most things by doing them, figuring things out as I go and being willing to change direction when something doesn’t feel right.

I don’t think creativity is about having one signature look or following a set of rules. For me, it’s about staying curious, seeing possibilities and being open to where an idea might take you.

Every property is different, every project brings something new, and there’s always another opportunity to create something that didn’t exist before.

And that’s probably what I love most about what I do. The creating, the building, the transformation and the satisfaction of seeing an idea become something real.

Welcome to Logan Brae Collection.
